Woody Peony Species are plants as they are found in the wild, or are very closely related. Often these selections of wild plants were used for crossing and are thus parents of the first generation of numerous widely distributed cultivated varieties. Many of these specimens are true rarities and threatened with extinction in the wild. In the genus Paeonia there are both herbaceous and woody wild species. Almost all of them are characterized by relatively small, single flowers and a very early flowering time. Most wild species prefer very dry soils and are rather slow in growth compared to their hybrid offspring.
In addition to Wild Species, our Woody Peony assortment includes Lutea-Hybrids, European suffruticosa, Japanese suffruticosa and Rockii-Hybrids. On this page you will only see Woody Peony Species now. For more information about woody peonies in general and useful tips for culture and care, click here.
